The Glen Canyon Dam was completed in 1966 and created Lake Powell by holding back the Colorado River. It’s 710 feet high and 1560 feet across and contains a powerful 1.3GW hydroelectric generating facility. When running at full capacity it generates about 60% as much electricity as the neighboring Navajo coal plant.

We opted to not overfly the Grand Canyon. The legal non-commercial flight corridor southbound is at 10,500’ and northbound 11,500’. Although possible it’s not exactly comfortable in an R22. The ship vibrates significantly more due to the much higher blade pitch and maximum forward speed is reduced from 102 knots to 80 or less depending on outside temperature. Nevermind the fact that the ground would be 1.5 miles below us!
